From the desert to The City to dear old Ireland. Grabbing a pint then on to London.

Wow, that’s a quick change! How did you manage to escape the airport in NYC long enough to go sightseeing?

The E train takes roughly 20 minutes to get to Penn Station.

I’m just imagining having already cleared customs, having to re-enter the US, make your way to the train, go to midtown, then back, through security again. Not something I would tackle with less than 6-8 hours’ layover. But if you can make it work, it’s like a free mini-vacation.

Customs in JFK runs pretty quick. Nevertheless, one doesn’t have to clear customs when flying from AZ to NY.

He was headed to Ireland and the UK, though — I guess it all depends on whether he cleared customs in PHX or just did it in JFK. A lot of trips, depending on originating airport, you will be flown to a “secure area” of the interim airport since you’re already technically on your international flight.

Sounds like it was booked more like separate legs.

Customs for entering EU/UK is done over there. On the way back, some airports have US Customs Pre- Clearance (Shannon, Dublin) but I don’t think the UK has that yet.

The airlines just make sure you have a passport when you board in the US.

I had eight hours. Took the E train to Central Park and had a few hours to grab pizza and walk around. No kids this time so everything is a lot quicker.

No need to clear customs when heading out of the US. Immigration entering Ireland took ten minutes because they aren’t paranoid  like us.

They just make you scan your passport when you get on your first flight. No need to clear customs for the connecting domestic flights. Some airports might be different, but it’s been the same for me flying internationally through LAX, Denver, JFK and Philly.

You have to clear customs once you get to the EU, but it generally takes ten minutes because they aren’t as crazy.
